Four and a bit years on and I'm not sure if anyone will read this thing anymore, but I do enjoy reading updates that pop up on long abandoned blogs.

We have two babies now, not really babies at all, our Elka is 6!!! ?! And Ari is 3. And we lasted almost 3 years in Richmond before fleeing to the Blue Mountains- turns out we weren't as tough as we thought we were... but also turns out that we love it here and life is better, although we do miss the coast, it's just objectively nice, but not really THAT far away if we get desperate.

But anyway, 6 and a half years of mothering, and my head does still work. And I feel like I've made that journey from complete and utter exhaustion, bombardment and confusion- that is becoming a parent- and I've survived, and the making in me survived too. I have less time, but I'm more patient than I used to be and I have a completely different perspective.

And I've worked out how to make the dolls I always wanted to make, but didn't have the time to learn to make. Market after market every weekend meant that I just had to turn out as much as I could- and I look at those blinkies and dew drop dolls, and they are cute and sweet and well sewn, and I'm a little shocked to see the faces that I managed to embroider- I'm not quite back to that level of skill yet- but I was always dreaming of different dolls, and drawing them but I wasn't able to sit down and have the time to fail a hundred time before getting to the place I needed to be. With Elka at school, and my chilled out buddy Ari at home, I somehow have muddled through that over the past 18 months. From ugly, terrible, wonky things to sweet dolls in clothes (yay!) and woollen hair.

The mere though of sewing clothes used to boggle my brain. I remember the first time I looked consciously at a quilt my Grandmother had made and it dawned on me that she had cut each little piece out and sewn them, bit by bit into a piece of fabric that was as big as my bed. Madness, I thought! Then I did it and it all made sense, bit by bit. And now I'm feeling that way about these new dolls, bit by bit, piece by piece, they come together. And it feels good.

So anyway, that's where I'm at.
But I managed to get my prints out and into the mail, albeit a bit late. I received all of my swap partners' efforts before I managed to get mine out. Of course, Elka came down with a fever, then me, and then the long weekend and guests, and gradually I got my spare room back and managed to get organised enough to get it done. And stamping this print, two triangles at a time was SLOW.

I went with plain pink triangles just because of the colour preferences of some of my swap buddies, but I really like the black on white, and I'm doing some overprinting with pink and yellow. I've really enjoyed this swap, and one day soon (hopefully!) I will post pictures of my swap bounty.
I went down to Spotlight- turns out our local Spotlight here is ENORMOUS, and bought some cotton to muck around on, and some linen to do the good stuff on. This is what I have been eyeing off on Pinterest.
I forgot you. We moved house, town, lives, jobs and things just got hectic there for a couple of months.

We no longer live near the ocean, we now live on the very far outskirts of Sydney, in a place that may as well be a country town! It is a country town, it is just very close to some very big things. And it sure is different. We've really only just arrived and the dust is still settling. I hope it all settles nicely...

They had been sitting there since before Elka was born! She is almost 2! I also found all of the supplies required to make more kits, including 3 different types of paper, embroidery thread, plastic bags and little sticky dots to attach a small sample piece of fabric to the front of each kit... It seemed like too good an opportunity not make some more up in time for Christmas. It's not often that things are so easily accessible around here...

So, I finished up the three almost done, and made another 10, and took them down to Emma-Lee's shop all ready for Christmas presents. They are $20 each, and they are half boyish/unisex fabrics, and half girly fabrics. and I'm in the midst of making another 10, and hoping to put 5 in my Etsy Shop soon, so stay tuned... or email me if you NEED them sooner than later, because things happen around here, things that prevent other things from getting done... But fingers crossed!

But photos of the blue bubble are to come because I think it may be my favourite handmade item in some time.

Christmas is coming. Eek. I started my Christmas shopping last week, and that makes me feel tremendously more organised than last year. Now that I have the pdf patterns back in my Etsy Shop, I was thinking about cool ways to personalise blinkies for presents. The embroidered blinkies or message blinkies as they were sometimes known, were always the most popular at market stalls and in shops. Sometimes a line from an obscure song would sit there for a month before anyone bought it, but they always did. The right person would see it, and bam! And they would seriously toddle off excited as can be.

So, I trawled through my Flickr photostream, and found some examples. These were always good for new babies too, especially if the parents hadn't found out if they were having a boy or a girl. One of the most popular lines was 'I'm a lover, not a fighter'.

I always used tracksuit material because it was soft, and plain, and I always think it looks better than using 100% cotton, the shape seems to work better, and something special with a small print inside the ears- Japanese linens are great.

People also used to go nuts over handprinted fabrics! It seemed like I just couldn't keep up with this kind of thing. This one is using a stamp that my friend Riyo made, but you could use just about anything.

And then there are stripes! Which always work well with dots. People sure do love stripes!

And Kristyn, a customer, just asked me on the weekend how on earth do you neatly sew the toy up at the end, and I found this really great video on ladder stitch which shows the exact way that I do it. I hope it helps.
This is the Ayeshe top that I made Elka. I love how it turned out, especially how it feels, but I must say that I didn't really enjoy making it. It was the second one I made because Elka is small and I've been stung by sizing charts in the past, so I sewed one up using cheap, scrap fabric, and so I was just a little over it by the time I was basting and top stitching this tiny little top. It was fiddly, and top-stitching isn't really my thing! I also had to unpick something- I can't even remember what it was, but I remember the process- unpicking double gauze fabric is not fun. But it wasn't complicated, I think if I'd had made it in a size 5, and the arm holes had fit around the arm of my sewing machine, I wouldn't have been soooo over it. And there was a nice moment when I was pressing the collar and Joe walked in and told me it was so cute, and he loved it, and that really made me feel good about the whole thing again. I will have to sew some elastic inside to stop the neck hole from gaping open though, it is a little low, and that somehow seems inappropriate on a 20 month old!

And this is the Apron Dress that I made from an Ottobre pattern. And it felt good, it is so simple and I've made one before, and I felt like myself again after all the top-stitching! I chopped up and resewed two of the fat quarters from the Handprinted Fabric Swap from earlier this year and I like how it all turned out. I like the complete lack of pink, and I like the imperfections of the stamps. And I like the old sheet I used to line it with. And I liked how easy it was. Sometimes easy is nice.

The orange pattern is by Susie, and the bunnies are by Anna.

Hurrah! Sewing and some photos! I just need to get the Bubble Dress photographed, preferably whilst on the child, but that might be setting my sights a little too high! :)

Well, I managed to make some things this past week! Despite having a baby who came down with a fever on the Sunday night before the KCWC started. I was thinking 'just my luck', but as it turned out, once things calmed down a little, she had some very, very long day sleeps, and by neglecting the housework and most other things, it all seemed to fall into place.

So I made two Ayeshe tops, one out of some cheap stuff from Spotlight, but I think it looks alright, and one from some Nani Iro that I have had stashed away since doll making days. I made the Nani Iro/Oliver and S Bubble Dress that I have been wanting to make for such a long time, I just have three buttons to sew on. I managed to make an apron dress from an Ottobre pattern that I've used before- I made Elka one in Autumn and she is now wearing it as a top with shorts on hot days, and I managed to use some of handprinted linen from the fabric swap a few months ago, which made me happy, I think it's so hard to decide to cut things like this up because they are special, but I really liked the way it turned out. And I managed to trace a short pattern and choose some fabric, because I realised toward the end of the week that shorts and skirts are probably what Elka needs most... And I think I've chosen a pattern to make a robot dress from.

Now I just need to take some proper photos, but part of my sewing strategy was to just use instagram to save time, and it seems to have worked. My username is 'beecah' by the way, as it is most things.

Yay me.
I'm going to attempt the Elsie Marley Kids Clothes Week Challenge again this year to make Spring and Summer clothes for Little Miss E, who at almost 20 months has finally hit the 10kg mark! We cheered. She is small, but our doctor says this is because she never. ever. stops. And she doesn't. Last time I attempted this challenge, we were plagued with months and months of colds, flu, tummy bugs and teeth, but it is Spring now, I have really gone to town on cleaning and decluttering, I have a sewing space set up and it is mine, all mine, and it is relatively organised. And because Elka is so small she is still wearing the robot pants that I made last time around but never photographed, and so I'm hoping she'll get a little while out of the clothes I make this time around.

This is my to-do wish list:
- Oliver and S bubble dress
- Figgys Ayashe blouse
- a robot dress, from an undecided pattern, from this fabric (E loves robots thanks to this wonderful book)

I'm also hoping the print some more fabric using my cat stamp to make another top or dress, but I've found that if I make very big lists, I feel overwhelmed and they don't become reality, so I'm keeping it short and simple, and keeping my fingers crossed!

I just noticed that I haven't posted in such a long time. Two months I think. And with a little cluster of emails about dolls and patterns and online shops, it occurred to me that people must still be reading- or at least checking my little blog.

I am still here.

I have been reading lots of blogs, and some books- parts of books, I'm yet to actually finish any book other than Save Our Sleep since E arrived- 19 months ago now! I have been chasing E and watching her grow, and learning so much, about her and me, and Joe. And it feels like we've all been sick a million times this winter which has been so exhausting.

I haven't turned on my sewing machine in such. a. long. time. As much as I have wanted to, space is just such a hassle for us. We even drove to Ikea and bought me a very long and narrow sewing table to fit into our bedroom, but getting the space organised has just been too much for me to think about with everything else, I am slowly edging towards it though. It's Spring now, so I seem to have caught the decluttering bug, not that I know where all this junk comes from, and I am sure there will be another load of it along soon enough, but I seem to be getting on top of it.

I relisted some of my old doll patterns in my Etsy Shop, in the hope that it will inspire me to kick on with other projects, and I even went through a mysterious box of trial and error toy sewing patterns that had been bugging me for so long. It's funny to revisit that stuff and see how much time and energy went into it all, and then kaput! A baby arrived. Part of me wants to be doing all of that stuff again, but this time with my little baby is so fleeting, and lovely, and intense and I want to be all here for it. So I guess it will happen gradually, when it's all ready to happen.
A piece of the second fabric- the orange kaleidoscopes, arrived in my mailbox yesterday and I am very tempted to do some foam stamping because I love the softness and texture of the printing.
In the end, of course, it all came down to time. Somehow Elka and I have had three colds already since Autumn, big ones that linger and require lots of cuddles and baths, and not much else. So when I had everything planned for weekend printing, and Elka woke up with a ridiculously snotty nose on Friday morning I was slightly panicked. Thanks to Joe- in a million different ways, I got all my printing done on Saturday, Sunday and finished it up while E slept at lunchtime today. Phew. And so I pressed it, folded it and hurried off to the postoffice and got it all in the mail by 4pm. Joe took Elka to the library and I am always amazed at how much i can get done on my own- seriously!

I used a lino stamp, and obviously it's completely imperfect, but I think being cats, it kind of works, it just looks a little like they have white cheeks (well, to me it does!), and I have plans to print some more and make Elka a little denim apron dress. The design was completely stolen from this one that I have loved since seeing it a while back, but I figure, like most things with design, everything is derived from somewhere, and it's not as if a designer designed a cat head... and most importantly, I'm not selling it, so I went with it.

The trickiest bit was figuring out why the paint wasn't as vibrant after a few stamps. After a lot of trial and error, I realised that you should just get a tiny bit of paint out of the jar at a time, enough for 4 or 5 five stamps. I think the paint was drying a little when I had a large amount sitting around waiting for me to roller it up onto the stamp.
I haven't done anything crafty, other than mend or finish things that have been bugging me for months and slowly the house is looking better, tidier, less washing piles, more yummy food in the afternoon and dinner cooked early and less of a scramble in the evenings, and I've eve gotten in some ridiculously early bedtimes too. But I couldn't resist signing up to the second handprinted fabric swap, I wasn't going to, I ummed and arrrhhhed, but on the last day of the sign up I just found myself writing the email to say I would. So, I guess the messiness will return for a little while. The quilt I started when Elka was still camping out in my tummy will sit a little longer, it was next on my to do list, and I'll have to get cracking...

This is a print by Leslie, I'm really loving the multicolours and simplicity, and the sharpness of the ink. Now I just need to figure out where to start... what to use? what to print? what colour?? on what???
It turns out that everyone getting sick for a week is a way bigger operation with a baby. It takes time to wash and dry and iron everything that piled up, to restock the freezer with all the meals that were eaten up almost everyday when we were too miserable to cook, and so on and so on.

And it is also apparently incredibly difficult to photograph a 15 and a half month old baby in the clothes you made her, in fact I'm finding it increasingly difficult to get her to wear clothes at all lately. Apparently being naked is all the rage, and standing in front of the mirror pointing at your belly button and roaring with laughter is too, in a big way!

All the nakedness has ironically led to more washing as I chase her around the house sponging wee out of the carpet with cloth nappies, and my neighbours must think I'm a saint because the clothesline is full of big terry towel squares!

But anyhow, this is Elka this morning in a hat I made a very long time ago, from this pattern. Finally she has decided that hats are alright again, of course, she really only likes to wear them inside... and this one is slightly squashed from being carried around in my bag everyday. I will endeavour to take more photos of her in the stretchy things I made her for the KCWC, which seems to be such a long time ago now, and I will also attempt to finish off the overalls I started making for her way back then.

Of all the weeks for Elka, Joe and I to get abysmally sick, it had to be this week! I did manage to sew three hours on Monday and on Tuesday, and I remember thinking that I was glad that 'unpicking' was specifically stated as an appropriate activity for the allotted sewing time. I sewed a cuff to the wrong end of a leg of a pair of pants twice. It wasn't until the second time I did it, at 8pm, which felt like a very late night at the time, that I realised that the cold I was battling was getting the better of me, and then I woke up on Wednesday and realised that I had to spend every minute Elka slept, resting myself, which always feels like such a waste of time to me, but two solid days of rest (when it was available!) and I feel a lot better. I only feel moderately crumby. And to top it off three new teeth have arrived on the scene as well.

I've got to say though, that I have a bunch of patterns cut that I never wouldn't have bothered with if I didn't sign up, I have sorted out clothes fabric from doll fabric and I'm not afraid of sewing with stretch fabrics anymore. And I'm feel more motivated to get out the overlocker one day soon- when there is time of course!

These are my favourites from the kcwc flickr group:

I have been playing around all week with stretch fabrics on my sewing machine. I have been looking up how to, and I'm finding that it isn't as difficult as I thought. Earlier in the year, feeling inspired by some Ottobre sewing success, I got all excited and cut out a t-shirt pattern for Elka, I sewed on the ribbing and then it just sat there in the pile for 4 months. The Ottobre instructions were for an overlocker, which I have, but I have no idea how to use/no space to set up, and I started looking around the net to try and find instructions, and what I found all seemed rather baffling and discouraging of bothering to sew stretch fabrics with a regular sewing machine... but then I read this post by Yana, which led me to this book my Meg McElwee, and I started to understand what to do. I also found this great YouTube clip which explains about using twin needles, which led to me breaking a twin needle on the first stitch, but that was my fault, and nothing to do with the clip! And so, using zig zag, I have managed to make Elka her first homemade t-shirt, I was so excited that I used fold over elastic instead of ribbing because that's all I had on hand, and so it has a strange 'Star Trek' vibe going on, but it is completely functional, and stretchy and the stitches seems sturdy enough. Now I have some nice 100% cotton adult t-shirts that I picked up at the op shop, and I will be making some shirts and pants from them, and I have actual ribbing too, so I'm hoping that by the end of the week I will have conquered my stretch fabric fears. Fingers crossed!

The last of Elka's little friends turned one and so I had an excuse to make something new, a mobile, a bit like one of Elka's, but slightly fancier in that I wrapped the metal hoop and I used fabric to hang it with as opposed to kitchen string. I also sewed the string from inside the raindrops- E's was just an afterthought of a thing, and when I attached the string to the sewn raindrops, they kept falling off! I remember making her first little lamb mobile, not really sure why I was bothering other than it was cute, but people kept telling me how essential they were, so I went with it. We now have 4, and even though the change table is packed away, I think they'll be around for a long, long time, we say 'Good Night' to all of them before bed, and we twirl them around when things get too intense around here.
I've been collecting inspiration on Pinterest, and I'm sure the reality will look quite different, and the idea of finding one hour a day to sew sounds quite simple, but I know will be tricky, but I'm going to try. Living in the Southern Hemisphere, I will of course be sewing Autumn/Winter clothes.
I've got a couple of weeks to get organised, so wish me luck!
I've almost made it to the end of the baby Birthday present making season, with a little pup from the good old Softies book. I used an old blanket that used to live in the back of Joe's car when we first met- it took several years to convince him that the tattered old thing would look much better in toy form, and I think it does.

And in going through some fabrics to make a small batch of winter dew drop girls, I had a dilemma, now that I'm sewing again, I keep putting the nicest fabrics aside for clothes for Elka... I love the dolls, but winter is coming and I've barely bought or made her anything because she is so tiny and I wasn't sure if she'd have a growth spurt, I want her to have all the nicest bits, poor dolls.
Oh my. Another photo of another 1st Birthday present. This requires me to be supremely organised! I was racking my brain trying to think of what I should make for one of Elka's little friends, a little boy could stand to be a little braver sometimes, and I remembered making one of these just before I fell pregnant and packed all my sewing stuff away to watch Mad Men and eat vegemite on toast everyday, and I got excited and made him his own ninja-blinky. I had great plans for these guys, there was going to be a set, and maybe there will be eventually...

About a month or so ago I managed to make my first dew drop girl from scratch since being pregnant. It was lovely to make one, and to have the head space to look at all my fabrics (at once, since Elka likes to get them out and sprawl them around on the floor), and to know the little person I was making it for.

I had managed to finish some up that I'd cut and embroidered towards the end of 2010! That sounds like a long time ago now, but it doesn't feel it, and I took them along with some other bits and pieces to The Milk Thieves Shop in Wollongong.

And I revised my high hopes for Arnold the Penguin after babysitting the birthday boy a couple of days ago, I discovered that he is quite fond of little dogs, and so a Elsie the Little Dog, from the More Softies book appeared last night. And his birthday isn't even until tomorrow! Arnold is still very much on the 'to do' list though.
