Glebe...

Ok, well, I have been meaning to write about Glebe since I got home, and now seems like as good a time as any... so... it was really good! I'm sure that I was under-prepared in many ways, and that I'll look back one day and laugh at my naivety in the whole situation, but I felt so much more prepared than I did at Bondi the week before, so much!

glebe!
Thanks for the photos Karen, you clever thing!

I have discovered that you should always try and get a corner spot if you can... double exposure is fantastic, and at Bondi I was hidden by two ginormous tents either side of me... not sure if people could actually see that I was there. And you should try and pre-empt things as much as you can, know your product etc., which is like retail 101, but practice saying all the stuff in your head out loud-- the reasons that you do things, things that might seem obvious to you, which aren't always obvious to others, such as the fact that I have wondered through the valley of stuffing choices and settled with simple old polyfil for various reasons, such as washability, general availability, cuddability--polyfil is squishy and soft... but customers associate synthetics with cheapness, whilst they associate things like cotton--which is highly flammable--with natural and good, as they do with wool, which is lovely, but not as easy to wash, and which would push the cost of my toys up a little. I also noticed that some people were making comments such as I wonder where she imports them from, which was a little disheartening, but it means next time, I need some signage making it explicit that I make them all myself, from scratch!

I'm learning as I go along! And I'm getting everything completely sorted so that my table looks really nice next time (which will be from August 1st), I'm going to buy a few metres of calico and stamp it with the wonderful little mushroom stamp I showed you a little while ago (just bought some fabric ink from here... very excited!). And making up a bunch of other things, that no doubt I'll show you as I finish!

I also made some friends, had lots of chats with stall holders and marvelled at the awesomeness of other people's wares... I love all this lego jewelry... thinking if I know someone that would wear lego cufflinks, and love the clothes that were on display by Red Ruby, they don't have a website, but they are divine screen-printed tops and skirts... great designs, great cuts and great fabrics! Resisted the urge to spend all sales $ on these, but it was extremely difficult.

But I didn't completely resist buying all together. I met Riyo, who sells a lot of cool stuff, Japanese fabrics, I bought some fat quarters, and stamps and lots of awesome felt stuff... and these sweet little zines for about $3... hand stamped from hand carved stamps that she makes... I'm starting to seriously love this stamping caper...

She has a blog and an Etsy Shop, and is at Glebe every week!

So, anyway, I'll stop blabbing on, and just say I had a great time, I'm booked again from the August 1, and will be making it a regular thing from then on, and that I'm pretty excited about the whole thing!

Now, I have to finish cleaning... I pulled the whole flat apart on Sunday, trying to create a permanent screen-printing station... I think Henry is enjoying the maze-like conditions, but Joe and I are not...

I love The Toy Society!!

I've been cleaning out my crafting space since I got home from the markets on Saturday (which I'll tell you about soon... it was GREAT!), and I've discovered toys I'd completely forgotten about... I've given toys to all the children and adults I know, so I got some labels and tags made up and got ready for some more drops. I was feeling particularly inspired since Joe's brother told me on Sunday that his sweet little girl, Isabella is totally into the whole thing! She is 8 and has the website bookmarked, and checks it regularly, she's coming down on the school hols, and we're going to do some toy making together! Yay! Her 4 year old sis is busting to make a sausage dog from the Softies book--which kind of scares me, since she wants to use a sewing machine, but it also excites me... I picked up some pink cord at the op shop today for that very purpose!

1. A Wee Wonderfuls hand-sewn butterfly which I dropped at the Parra Meadows School in North Wollongong.

I hung it on a tree, because it's a butterfly!

2. Little Miss Kitty was left at a park in Erkinville in Sydney.

3. And this Mathilde prototype dolly is actually quite sweet, so I left her at the entrance of Sydney Uni village in Camperdown on my way to the art shop... where I got soooo many good things, but more on that tomorrow...

my creative space & stuff!

Well, I have another market to go to tomorrow. This time, Glebe, hoping that it's better than Bondi, and that the weather is a little more palatable there than it has been here... sunny, but oh so windy! Most of my creative time has been zapped up with preparation, but I do try to use every second available to me, and this is how I've been using it...

I have 3 tubs full of toys and I've also been making up some pot-holders to sell. I've been making my way through my scraps tub, hence all the patchwork, and I've also been using up screen-printing seconds, and I've used a woolen blanket in the middle, that I bought from the op shop for making dolls quilts with, so it's all quite efficient and environmentally sound!
finished toys

pot-holders galore
Tom Yum Vegetarian soup from the 3 Mangoes on Enmore Rd (in Enmore), makes my heart swoon!

Yes, and this is the unfinished tub... some just need a few stitches, some need a whole lot of doings!
unfinished stuff...

stamps
Look at the cool stamps that I bought from Jess. Pretty excited about using these, I just need some ink.

amy karol book
And I'm busting to make this little hat from the Amy Karol book. It's too cute!

panda face
And I've started working on a new toy, Miss. Panda!

I've also been busy trying to get together a bit of a network for crafty types down here in the Gong, and so I've been emailing, setting up a new twitter account, some flickr stuff and another blog in relation to that. If you know anyone is this region of NSW, please pass on my contact details and the blog address: here. Pretty please with a cherry on top!

Flickr Faves!

Ok, so I've been going a little over the top with my collages lately, I'll admit that, but they are a great way of throwing things together. This one is my recent flickr faves, all based on my search for 'fortune cookies', I'm playing along with Art Mind, so check her awesome chalk-board collage as well as the other lovelies that link from it!
fortune cookies
1. fortune cookies..., 2. Day 37/365 : Fortune comes in a cookie these days, 3. Late Nite Fortunes, 4. The cookie was stale, but the fortune was dead on + 136/365, 5. Fortune Cookie, 6. Fortune Cookie

So, why fortune cookies you ask? Well, just because really. Last week we picked up a box at the supermarket and we guzzled them down rather quickly... even Henry decided they were worth eating, and he doesn't have much of a sweet tooth, so they must be special. Anyway, I have been finding little messages all over the house ever since, I think Henry thought the best part was the rustly paper that can be chased, and which hides quite easily, all the better for chasing!

I live with a sculptor...

joe the sculptor man
Have I mentioned that I live with an artist? I might have somewhere along the way, but anyway, I do. Joe was a graphic designer but he hated it, and starting painting instead, and this year he decided to do some classes at TAFE so that he could do some figure drawing, and just out of timetable-convenience, he decided to take a sculpture class, and low and behold, he discovered that he's rather talented in that department. It's only been a couple of months, and already he's doing things that I think are amazing! And, like me, he's all about being obsessed with things... we see each other in the mornings and we usually watch The Bold and Beautiful together in the afternoons, but other than that, it's all heads down, bottoms up around here. He sculpts, I sew! And it's a pretty happy, contented sort of place!
